The hard part is deciding between so many great names and features. Many of these motor oils are available in multiple configurations. The brand has made great lengths in producing a formula that controls sludge, and cleans whilst protecting your engine against corrosion or rust.

Amazon Basics has been into making essentials for your life- and breaking into the automobile maintenance field just makes sense. They make their Conventional Oil in a variety of viscosity configurations. The consumer feedback is through the roof- probably in part because of the price.

As far as conventional oil goes, Amazon Basics seems to have their bases covered. Keep in mind, part of the lower cost is because Amazon is manufacturing and selling- cutting their upfront investment cost as well.

The sludge in your motor will dissolve in this formula with ease. The price of this conventional oil is pretty average, but we are impressed with the customer feedback. MAGNATEC ensures oil stays wherever your engine needs it, doing a better job preventing oil from draining to central locations where it would need to recirculate upon startup. Is all that a marketing gimmick?

Formula Shell offers a versatile conventional motor oil that encourages better fuel economy. One of its best features is the price. Valvoline Premium Conventional, a trusted name in oil for over years, tops our list for the best engine oil with a conventional formula. Valvoline has done a great job of preparing a recipe here that exceeds the acceptable standards in all markets, both with turbocharged and non-turbo engines.

This is an impressive feat for them to achieve and one their customers benefit from greatly. Stop-and-go driving in your daily commute can actually cause a lot of damage. Quaker State designed this conventional motor oil with this in mind. Tried and true is an understatement for Quaker State. Their 5W motor oil has been sold to vehicle owners for over years.

With a wide range of operating temperatures and impressive track record, this is a great choice for owners who depend upon their vehicle to perform in a wide array of environments and demands.

While Castrol makes a great oil, there are many competing brands who also make excellent products. More important than finding the best car oil brand is finding the best oil for your car. Within that span of time, we assume hundreds of people were a part of the process, and every one of them was extremely well-qualified to do so.

That being said, the recommendations those people made regarding how to care for the vehicle long-term are not something to take lightly. Motors are subjected to high operating speeds, high operating temperatures, and long hours of use. The viscosity determined by your manufacturer as the best oil for your engine was a choice which included many different factors:.The independent resource for information and insights on the quality and integrity of lubricants in the marketplace.

Viscosity is a critical measure that determines how thick or thin a lubricant is. Viscosity is measured by several methods to determine the behavior of motor oil during cold startups and while hot at operating temperatures. Viscosity Index measures the change in viscosity with temperature.

Viscosity Index improver additives are used to optimize viscosity at different temperatures. Detergent additives help to keep metal surfaces in an engine clean by controlling formation of deposits i. Such deposits can harm an engine by clogging oil passages that lubricate an engine, increase wear and reduce engine performance.

A blend of calcium and magnesium-based detergents are most commonly used. A shift towards increased use of magnesium was required to address the needs of new gasoline direct injected GDI engines. Detergent additives also help prevent corrosive wear by neutralizing acids formed as a by-product of combustion and other processes in an engine. Antiwear AW additives help protect metal surfaces against impact friction and wear between moving parts in an engine. Such additives work by adhering to metal surfaces and forming a protective film between moving surfaces.

The most widely used AW additive are chemistries containing phosphorus and zinc. Some lubricant manufacturers also employ the use of antiwear additives containing boron, molybdenum and titanium among others.

Antiwear additives are multifunctional in that they also act as corrosion inhibitors and, more significantly, antioxidants. Although motor oil is subject to contamination from a number of metals related to wear, and abrasive material in the form of silicon when in use, new motor oil typically does not contain such metals at any appreciable levels.

The presence of these metals iron, aluminum, copper, lead, nickel, tin, sodium, potassium, etc. Such contaminants can be harmful to an engine. Some can also be part of an additive, such as copper or sodium, but these are not often seen. Cone Top.Just out of curiosity, what do you guys think about those Oil additives that STP and others make?

I was wondering if it would benefit my Elderly Honda engine or if it would do more harm than good. Thoughts and ideas? How thick? All I can say is that I would personally avoid this stuff, as you could wind up with oil that is too thick to flow properly, particularly if temperatures drop.

As to a fuel system cleaner, if your engine is in need of this, the only two brands that I would recommend are Seafoam and Techron by Chevron. I always recommend against STP, unless you have a wornout engine and you want to get one more summer out of it.

Modern oils have all the aditives you need. Fuel system cleaners the ones that work are a good idea everymiles or so. I have a slightly different take on STP. Many ago I was responsible for all operational decisions and work in a very large high speed production plant. We had just started it up and were running it without making product and at low speed to work in all the hand-scraped main bearings etc. When I told them to speed it up to full speed I had them run it for and hour or so and on one of the machines in the line driven by a 50 HP motor with a forced oil lubrication system I had our electrician check the current draw on the main drive motor.

I then had STP put into the crankcase according to the mixing instructions and after it was thoroughly mixed into the motor oil I had the electrician check the amperage the motor was drawing. Since only about 10 minutes had elapsed between the two and since the speed was not changed I concluded that the significant reduction in amperage was the result of reduced friction.

This machine had three large crankshafts that operated the mutitude of mechanisims on the machine. To me reduced friction was good - very good! So based on this I believe that dismissing STP as worthless is open to discussion. Mike is exactly right about STP and cold winter days. Many years ago I worked for a small town Subaru dealer. Subaru at one time required, and paid for, an manual transmission oil change at the miles mark along with several other little chores.

You can just imagine what shifting a transmission was like on a zero degree day, much less a 15 below one, with STP diluted 90 Weight gear oil. The best analogy would be rowing a boat through a tar pit.

One could even notice it when the car was decelerating since it gave the feeling that the brakes were half-applied.STP is an American brand and trade name for automotive aftermarket products, especially lubricants such as motor oil and motor oil additives.

I change oil every season in my Kohler Magnum 12 and have always used Pennzoil 30W. I've owned this tractor for 17 years and the previous owner another 11 or 12 years I don't know the year of manufacture. Has anyone had any experience in using STP oil and is it any good? This engine runs beautifully and obviously I want to keep it that way and I'm a bit apprehensive about this oil.

I haven't used it and I can still take it back and try to hunt down Pennzoil but I'll run it if it gets some "positive" endorsements! If it is good enough for the King it is good enough for me! I don't even know who makes oil for STP. I know Napa sells 30W oil as Napa oil but it's made by the same company that makes Valvoline. I stock up when I do. I can not believe the manufacturer of the oil in our machines is really going to matter. Oil being there sure.

Regular oil changes maybe although I test that all the time. I do make sure the oil is full. He'd make you an offer you couldn't refuse! I did not know the STP branded products were still around. I use a api sn rated oil or one of the latest API rated oils.

I change oil at the specified intervals. The difference Im sure is going to be the additives. SN is the latest api rating. Yes some people had some serious engine problems because they did not look at the API rating and or did not know what the API rating is used for. Digger 66 hit the nail on the head. As much as we prize our little engines the brand of oil isn't going to matter. STP does extensive advertising and you the consumer are the person footing the bill thru higher prices on the shelf which in turn pays for the racing teams that you follow.
